Join me for an hour long discussion at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Washington, DC on Sunday, December 14 at 2:00pm. I’ll be sharing a bit about my journey as a food blogger, The History Kitchen section of my website, and my love of culinary history. I’ll also be talking about the foods of the Union soldiers during the Civil War and sharing a recipe from that time period. Click here for more information and to reserve a seat. Hope to see you there!
I’ve been doing research for my book club discussion which will be next week and is about passover during the civil war. Came across your website and the fact that you have already had what sounds like a great discussion and learning experience. Would it be possible for you to share some of the info and recipes with my group??? We would be so grateful.
Thanks so much
Lois
Hi Lois! Passover during the Civil War– what an interesting idea. I haven’t done any research about Passover specifically, but here are some of the sources I found helpful in my research (some include recipes):
Billings, John D. (originally published 1842, reprint 1993) Hardtack & Coffee, The Unwritten Story of Army Life. University of Nebraska Press/Bison Books, Lincoln, NB, US.
Davis, William C. (2003). A Taste for War: The Culinary History of the Blue and the Gray. University of Nebraska Press. US.
Herbst, Ron and Sharon Tyler (2009). The Deluxe Food Lover’s Companion. Barron’s Educational Series, Inc., Hauppauge, NY.
Holzer, Harold and Symonds, Craig (2010). The New York Times Complete Civil War. Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers, New York, NY.
Murphy, Jim (1993). The Boy’s War: Confederate and Union Soldiers Talk About the Civil War. Sandpiper, Boston, MA.
You might also check out the book “Matzoh Ball Gumbo – Culinary Tales of the Jewish South.” Not sure if any of the content stretches back to the Civil War, but it’s worth a shot. Enjoy your discussion!
Soy Vay is an important ingredient for my tofu stir fry w/Asian vegetables; prepare this several times month. LOVE THE HOISIN AND THE SESAME.
Thanks all! It was a fun afternoon. Next time I’ll bring a video camera so I can share it online. 🙂
Wish I could be there. Knock ’em dead, Tori! 🙂
Go Tori go!
What an honor! I hope that someone filmed it and you put it on youtube for your fans,
