My husband got me started on apple cider vinegar. About four months ago he started drinking warm water with a spoonful of cider vinegar first thing in the morning. He heard about it on Israeli television and urged me to try it. “It’s really good for your health and digestion. It should be the first thing you drink when you wake up.”
The thought of drinking vinegar first thing in the morning nauseated me. “No thanks, Honey! I’ll stick to my coffee.”
A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism as well as an auto immune issue known as Hashimoto’s disease. While I am lucky not to have many of the more difficult symptoms associated with these disorders, I do often experience fatigue.
After my husband started the cider vinegar routine, a friend of ours who is a doctor of Chinese medicine recommended I drink warm water with lemon, honey and ginger first thing in the morning. He explained that this lemon, honey and ginger combination is good for both the thyroid and digestion. The combination seemed more palatable than my husband’s vinegar concoction, so I went for it.
I was amazed at how I felt after a week of drinking this mixture. The ginger warmed my thyroid area each morning and stimulated my senses. Before long, I cut back on my morning coffee ritual, finding that the lemon, honey and ginger seemed to wake me up just as well as the caffeine (and no jitters, hurrah!). I was better hydrated, and starting the day off with a healthy drink seemed to set me on the right track for the rest of the day.
A few weeks later, my husband suggested I try adding a small spoonful of the cider vinegar to the lemon/honey/ginger drink. After looking up the health benefits, he was right– there are many! Raw apple cider vinegar is alkaline-forming, which means that it can help to balance your body’s pH levels. It also has prebiotic properties which boost gut health and immunity.
Combining apple cider vinegar with honey and ginger creates a powerful boost of antioxidants that aids in digestion and weight loss. This drink can help to combat indigestion, nausea and bloating. Some folks notice a relief in their acid reflux symptoms when they drink this mixture regularly. It can also help to relieve many cold symptoms, including congestion.
After reading about all of these benefits, I went for it. You know what? It wasn’t half-bad. In fact, after a few mornings I barely noticed the cider taste; the lemon, honey and ginger flavors overpowered any off-flavor from the cider.
It has become my morning ritual each and every day – I make one drink for me and one for my husband. Having reaped the benefits for weeks now, I figured it was finally share-worthy for the blog!
While apple cider vinegar has had a noticeably positive affect on my overall wellness and has long been considered a cure-all for many ailments, this drink is not for everyone and does come with its own set of precautions. Cider vinegar is fairly acidic, and can cause throat irritation if not properly diluted or if too much is consumed. It can also break down tooth enamel over time if you’re not careful.
This drink is quite diluted which helps, but you can protect yourself even more by rinsing your mouth out after you finish the drink, then brushing your teeth. Apple cider vinegar may also react with some medications, including laxatives, diuretics and medications taken for diabetes and heart conditions. Always consult your doctor before taking apple cider vinegar to treat any medical conditions you may be experiencing.
If you really want to follow my morning routine, I always down one of these vitamin C packs (recommended by my naturopath) after sipping the cider drink. They taste really odd, but I have to say my immunity seems to be stronger than ever. I can’t remember the last time I caught a cold!
If you decide to juice fresh ginger, this is the juicer I use. It’s the best I’ve found for ease of use and easy cleanup. Of course, if you’re not into juicing, there is no need to buy a juicer just to make this drink. You can make it a few different ways, which I will explain below!

Description
This infusion recipe can start your morning in health with a warm beverage including ginger, apple cider vinegar, fresh lemon juice & honey.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups hot water (the same temperature you would use to make tea)
- 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 tsp raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar (or up to 3 tsp)
- 1 tbsp honey (I use manuka honey)
- 1 tsp fresh ginger juice OR 1/2 to 3/4 tsp powdered ginger spice OR 2-inch knob peeled ginger, sliced (ginger is to taste - use more or less as desired, but use enough so that your throat tingles when you drink it!)
Instructions
- If using fresh ginger juice or powdered ginger: combine all ingredients and mix until well incorporated. Serve hot and sip it like a tea. If using fresh ginger: Combine the peeled fresh sliced ginger and 1 1/2 cups water in a saucepan and simmer on the stovetop for 2-3 minutes. Remove ginger pieces, then stir in the lemon juice, cider vinegar, and honey. Serve hot and sip it like a tea. When finished, rinse your mouth out well with water, then brush your teeth. I usually follow this routine by drinking a full glass of room temperature or warm water.
Tori, I love your recipes. They are DELISH! I do have one quick comment about this beverage. I am in the dental profession and was pleased to see you caution your peeps on the acidity of this daily drink. I can appreciate the potential benefits of this daily ritual and all the ingredients that can helpful to our overall health. While rinsing with plain water right after is a great suggestion, the brushing of the teeth should not happen for at least 30 minutes after finishing this drink. (or any acidic beverage for that matter) Just an fyi. The acidic pH softens our enamel and brushing too soon could enhance damage to our tooth structure. So just wait a bit before picking up a toothbrush. One of the comments below suggested drinking through a straw. That can also help protect the teeth. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful recipes. Great tips Mb, thanks for sharing!
Hi Tori, I really appreciate your work on this site. I was able to follow your instructions to make my first homemade syrup. I’m really excited about this. Thank you.
I tried your recipe and it’s good, thank you! I let mine cool down a bit and then I use those big bubble tea straws or the one from Ikea to sip to protect my teeth from the acidity & stains. I also add turmeric & black pepper if I’m boiling the mixture for better benefits.
I have been taking a mixture of Tbs Organic raw ACV
1 tsp lemon juice
1tsp honey
1/4 tsp crushed ginger
Mixed with about 20 to 30mls tap water then stirred well
I drink it through a straw 1/2hour before my meal twice a day
This has helped my weight drop by 4lbs short of 3 Stoneplus my chronic kidney has improved from a 3A Im much healthier and a lot fitter I swear by the above mixture
Hi, I have been drinking ginger root & lemon for a long time. However, I chop up a whole nob of ginger & then pour boiling water over it & let it steep in a quart jar. Then after it is cooled, I refrigerate & put a Tbls. of the pulp & a bit of the liquid in a cup of water & then microwave & add the lemon & drink-pulp & all. Should I not be ingesting the pulp? After reading your article, im going to add vinegar and honey. Thank you,but please answer my question about the ginger pulp. Perhaps, I’m not getting the benefit of the ginger by doing it that way? Thanks again. Eager for your rely. Linds
I don’t think there is anything wrong with eating the pulp, but I am not a nutritionist so can’t say for certain.
I have been drinking this on and off for some time(plus cinnamon)and always feel great. I can tell everyone the benefits will be apparent in short order.

I’m keto and can’t use honey. Going to substitute liquid stevia. This is supposed to be good for acid reflux.
Are we able to drink it cold? Same benefits?
My Chinese doctor friend advised that drinking it warm in the morning was the best way to go. I am sure drinking it cold is helpful as well.
I suffer with digestion problems and have tried many things and starting tomorrow morning.. I will be trying this…Thanks.. Pray it works for me…
More effective when you add Cinnamon as well
how long can you store this drink?? does it lose it’s nutrients after a period of time sitting in the fridge?? Can you drink it as a cold beverage??
Cant wait to try this! Funnily enough I can across this post having searched ginger & apple cider vinegar – but I also suffer from hypothyroidism / Hashimoto’s. I got diagnosed 6 years ago now, but really struggle with what I should and shouldnt eat to benefit my thyroid. I’ll definitely be following your site from now on – and it’d be super interesting if you had any other tips / recipes that help your thyroid / hashimotos!
Ellen, I’m sorry you struggle with thyroid issues! I cut gluten recently because my doctor told me it can help cut down on inflammation throughout the body. Not sure how much it is helping but that combined with Armour has helped my numbers reach normal levels. I still bake for my family, though. My energy levels are pretty good!
Good morning Tori,
Thanks for the great idea. I’m a multiple myeloma patient with a compromise immune system. I catch colds often and battling one now as we speak. I just drank a cup and my cough has stopped at least for now?? I think I will have a second cup later and this time I will add the apple cider vinegar ?
So happy to hear it helped Nicole!
How much weight can you possibly lose and what’s the time frame?
Hi Mattie, that is dependent on so many factors, I couldn’t really say. It’s a better question for a nutritionist who is familiar with your particular body type, eating habits, level of activity, etc. Sorry I can’t be of more help!
Tori, this recipe is wonderful! I saw it on your IG the day you posted and pinned it for later. I have finally had a chance to try and love it. It reminds me of a warm version of Trim Healthy Mama’s good girl moonshine. I cannot have honey, so I used two packets of Truvia. It is so nice to just sit and sip this and catch up on computer stuff.
Yay! So glad you like it Jennifer. I have also started drinking it hot in the evenings while I decompress from the day. It’s so nice and warming, especially during the winter months. 🙂
Sounds great, except for the part about brushing your teeth afterwards. I was advised to rinse with water only after consuming anything acidic, then follow up with brushing no sooner than an hour later. If you brush too quickly, your brush away the enamel vs. preserving it. Any dentists out there care to comment?
Interesting Nancy! I’ll be curious to hear as well.
Hello 🙂 why have we to brush teeth after ?
Thank you 🙂
The acid in the vinegar is not good for tooth enamel.
This was great. I added a bit of turmeric to it and really enjoyed it. Turmeric also has great health benefits.
Hi,
My sister gave the boiled extract of ginger lemon honey, added vinegar to it. It has an unpleasant strong odour. I mix 10 drops in water and take every morning on empty stomach. Everytime I have to shake it as some sediment settles at the bottom half.
How long can I preserve & use it?
l have just stated, but l only use grand ginger one spoon, l use one spoon apple cider vinegar and one spoon fresh lemon. l don’t use the honey because l checked my blood sugar level and it was 4.7 and l heard honey is also sugar but l really want to loss weight especially around waist. what should I do. Thanks
I am just drinking my first ACV, honey, ginger water, and lemon n a warm glass of water. It actually tastes not to bad. Tastes terrible without the honey. I have been reading and searching the internet for proof to the claims of it being good for certain things (cleanse, digestion, etc.). I have found no real studies that show any significant benefit. Most say to just eat a balanced, real food diet. The weight loss was minimal (monthly) but, there was some loss in studies. pH balance and detoxification are done normally by your body, and your liver does a great job of doing just that. Rather than following these fads (and that is just what they are), just eat smaller portions, eat real food not the processed crap that is all around us, and move our body. ALSO, drink lots of water. Our bodies are meant for whole foods, not processed. If you think you don’t have time to eat properly, think again. It is quite easy. Free up time for your (and your families) health. No one to blame but yourself. We are accountable for our own health. Your Dr. is not!
U probably want to try adding chilli with the mix.
After the stenting procedure i came to know about this garlic-ginger-lemon-honey solution. Now that i am already undergone the procedure and now on prescribed medication, can i use this solution for prevention?
Hi Goutam, I suggest you give the recipe to your physician to ask his or her thoughts, and to make sure none of the ingredients interfere with your prescriptions.
Do you drink this 1/2 to one hour after taking your thyroid medication in the morning? I also have Hashimoto’s and have to take Synthroid in the morning giving it time before I eat.
Hi Jay! I take my thyroid meds first always, wait 30 minutes, then drink this along with my Vitamin C supplement. 🙂
Hi..I used proper mixture with honey at the end..all went fine but the mixturw turned light green in color after boiling. Just wanted to confirm if it is still fine. The smell is pungent and tastes sour.
Please suggest.
Hi Samra, this has never happened to me before… strange. Not sure what to tell you!
Comment to the person who had the mixture turn green. It could be to do with the pan they”re using. Sounds like a reaction with the metal. I use a remedy like this from my grandmother since a very long time and can only suggest using an enamel pan.
If apple cider vinegar is too strong for you, add it to a glass of high quality organic apple cider. It’s much smoother. Add the other ingredients as you like. I usually pour it over ice.
have you ever made more than one serving and stored it in the fridge? if so how long? I’d love to make a weeks worth and store it in the fridge. I drink it 3x a day but buying this pre-made is so expensive.
This recipe is great.. it’s my first time trying apple cider vinegar in a drink honestly but it does have a good tingle to it. The smell almost made me dump it but small sips without breathing in the smell works.
Can i use real lemon juice in a bottle instead of real lemons and can i use jarred mince garlic instead of fresh garlic……or is it safer all natural
I prefer the flavor of fresh lemon juice in this recipe. As for jarred garlic, there is no garlic in this recipe… but if you are just asking in general, I tend to prefer fresh garlic, but have been known to use the jarred stuff when I’m in a hurry.
A Filipino Pastor is scheduled for an Angioplasty operation. They raised large amount of money. While waiting for the schedule, he took the GLAGH mixture (Garlic, Lemon juice, Apple Cider Vinegar, Ginger and honey. I don’t know the exact amount per ingredient) i think 2x or 3x daily. Then the operation day came, the doctor took a lab test before the operation. The doctor was amazed that the blockage in his heart was gone!
Upon hearing this from my husband (who had fellowshipped with the pastor), I prepared the mixture and I am now taking it.
Are there any side affects to this infused mixture of apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, pure ginger juice and honey in warm water every morning before breakfast.
Thanks for enlightening me on the subject.
Zahid
Hi Zahid! I’m not a nutritionist and can’t speak for all bodies or conditions, so it’s really a better question for your doctor or nutritionist. I can only speak for myself. I have noticed a side effect of losing a bit of extra weight (not an unwelcome effect!) that seems to coincide with starting this drink. If it’s not well diluted it can cause heartburn and acid erosion on the teeth (covered in the post above).
Hi I have been using this grate healthy drink for many months. I normally store the cut limes add grated ginger and add honey store it in fridge.I make this every two weeks.
Every morning l prepare a drink using a pint glass of hot water and squeeze two lime pieces and some June from the jar which Contains ginger. I then add ACV two spoons and drink. You think I can add apple cider vinegar to the storage jar and keep in fridge? Please help.
I think that would probably be fine, but having not tried it myself I can’t be certain that it wouldn’t cause a strange texture issue with the honey. In theory it should be fine, vinegar is a natural preservative. But no promises!
Hi, I use 1tbps lemon juice, 1 tbsp cider vinegar, 1/2 tsp ginger, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1 tbsp honey, in 1 cup warm water before going to bed & I sleep like a baby.
Hello, I drink a variation of this all the time and I am always making up the recipe. It is always a guessing game and sometimes it’s great and sometimes not so I’m glad to see a recipe I might follow. I do drink this A LOT and I do worry about my teeth. This “tonic” as my husband calls it, seems to keep my body feeling good and I can tell when I’ve not had any in a while. My guess is, it helps with overall inflammation and I just feel better. I have been doing it a bit different but I liked to this method. I’ve never used anything but knobs of ginger and it is not always easy when you’re in a hurry so I might try the power. I’ve been making a concentrate but I’m never sure if it’s the healthiest and safest way to do it. I’ve let the ginger steep a long time, sometimes hours. Do you know if this changes the health benefits of the ginger in any way? I alternate between maple syrup and honey. In the summer I pour the concentrate over sparkling water and ice and add mint. This is divine. It is all I drink (my poor teeth). It may not have the health benefits of drinking it fresh, hot and in the morning but it still is a lovely drink.
I love the idea of making a cold infusion with sparkling cider! As for the long steeping of the ginger, I don’t know if that changes things but I wouldn’t think so?
I’ve been trying this for about a week now. Great results. I found a receipt that adds cinnamon. That do you think about that?
I have heard that cinnamon is very good for stabilizing blood sugar levels… if you like the flavor, it can only help! 🙂
Hi Tori,
I drink this for my sinuses, it also good for Grave’s Disease which I was diagnosed with. It’s the opposite condition, hyperthyroidism. I agree this drink is good in the morning and before bed.
this drink is too good. I have IBS and I am bloating issues. I have started drinking this at-least 2 times in a day , It has helped me reduce bloating and also whenever I have cold and cough, I make this and drink at-least 3 times a day, because i don’t like to take medicines for cold and cough. It always helps . It a elixir I believe .
This is a great alternative to coffee! And anytime of day it’s great without the vinegar.
And where did you get that gorgeous copper pot?!!
Thanks!
Hi Kath! I got it here==> Copper Turkish Coffee Pot.
Could we make this in a big batch to use over the week or will that be unhealthy?
Hi Tamara, I think that would work as long as you use a container that you can shake, to make sure ingredients are fully mixed and not settled. Also be sure to heat it before drinking, that is key. I tend to like the flavor of freshly squeezed lemon juice, but I don’t think pre-squeezing will harm the mixture. Good luck!
I make a big batch to last a few days and make sure it’s a container that I can shake to mix it up again. I definitely prefer it cold and don’t care for it warm. I also went to local farmers market to get local honey. Tori Avey – is there a reason for heating before drinking healthwise? or is that your preference? Just curious. I want to keep taking this daily 🙂 also I do use a straw to preserve my teeth.
Hi Coleen! A doctor of Chinese medicine recommended that I drink it warm in the morning for my low thyroid. I’m not sure if the temperature makes a big difference. I tend to run colder due to the thyroid issue so it’s nice drinking it warm, but I’m sure drinking it cold has benefits too!
An added benefit if you use local honey is help for seasonal allergies :0)
Interesting KJ!
Will you lose health benefits if you make it in the evening and re-heat in the microwave in the morning?
Hi Tori,
Isn’t a 2-inch knob of peeled ginger a lot more than 1 teaspoon?
Janet in Jerusalem
Hi Janet – the knob is steeped, not eaten, so you need a bigger chunk in order to get the same strength of ginger in the steeping liquid. I hope that makes sense!
My husband used to gulp of shots of apple cider vinegar whenever he started having flu symptoms and it really worked for him. But, was too much for me to try! I like the idea of this drink with lemon, ginger and honey, doesn’t sound as bad.
wondering where you got your juicer from
After trying many juicers this one is the absolute best I’ve found for ease of use and easy cleanup ==> Omega Nutrition Center Juice Extractor
I love my morning ACV. Just a note on brushing teeth after drinking though…….. Acidic drinks (and food) soften the enamel on the teeth. This chemical reaction is even more marked when the drink is hot. If you brush your teeth directly after drinking you could damage, or even remove, the softened enamel. So you should rinse your mouth with plain water directly after drinking and then brush your teeth no less than half an hour later.
Great tip Deb, thanks! I will update the post.
Have you tried drinking it through a straw ? This way you bypass the teeth.
I’ve always had hot water & freshly squeezed lemon juice every morning. Your recipe with added apple cider vinegar, honey & ginger sounds even better. I’ll give it a try.
I take Synthroid and am curious to know what bad reaction you had to it. It is a much cheaper way to treat hypothyroidism, but if you have had better results with Armour thyroid, maybe I should stop considering cost and switch for better health.
Hi Nancy – Synthroid made me feel extremely wired and short of breath, like an elephant was sitting on my chest. I had a scary few weeks trying to figure out what caused these symptoms, but finally identified the Synthroid as the issue. Even after lowering and adjusting the dose, I still had issues. Armour is derived from natural components, which some people seem to process better. It is the only thyroid medication that has helped me. Those who are vegan or keep strictly kosher may not consider this an option, because it is derived from porcine thyroid. It is a personal choice between you and your doctor. If you are doing well on Synthroid, you may not want to switch things around, however if you’re noticing side effects or feeling unwell on Synthroid, it might be worth looking into.
WOW, my recipe is one found in many places. Start with 1 Tbs and after a month increase to 2Tbs of unfiltered ACV Apple Cider Vinegar. Mostly I can only find Braggs. I tsp of pure honey and 1 c of warm filtered water. I started drinking this in the mornings about 5 months back. After 40 years of a mug of tea as my wake up drink. I enjoy this now. It seems to have cut back on my belly fat? Helped the high BP and my perspiration seems sweeter? If that’s possible? Hehe.
I use the juicer you recommend. I’ve never had another? I like it. Unfortunately I cannot leave it set up. Due to the kitchen being a galley type. However it is easy to clean and my fave is carrot, pear and ginger. Thanks for a great blog … Cheers Jamie
So sorry about your thyroid issues.
Question: have you found any clinically measurable benefits from this concoction? Have your thyroid levels changed? It would be interesting to know for all of us out here who have thyroid and/or hyperparathyroid issues.
Hi Marietta! My levels have improved a great deal, but I can’t say this is what did it, since I also started a round of Armour thyroid (after a terrible reaction to synthroid). I started both the lemon drink and the Armour around the same time, and I am back to a healthy thyroid level. It could be multiple factors contributing to the improvement in function.
This seems like a nice alternative to the plain apple cider vinegar which I have just started doing a few weeks ago. From a logistics standpoint is sounds like you drink this, brush teeth, then drink water. Is this before or after breakfast? Seems a bit odd to do this and then have to eat and brush your teeth again. Thanks!
Hi Lauren! I do it first thing in the morning, before breakfast or anything else. I usually drink the water before brushing my teeth. Gives a nice hydration boost to the start of your day. 🙂
