I first met Gabi Moskowitz, otherwise known as the BrokeAss Gourmet, when we spoke as co-panelists at the IFBC food blogging conference in Portland, Oregon. We hit it off immediately. Gabi and I have a lot in common– we’re both food writers/bloggers, we’re Jewish, we bake challah, and we love sharing recipes with our readers. Recently we found out we have another thing in common; we’re both involved in the entertainment industry! While I’ve been busy writing and executive producing Tribe of the Wild, Gabi has been developing a show loosely based on her life as a San Francisco food blogger. “Young & Hungry” premieres tomorrow night at 8:00pm ET/PT on ABC Family, and I could not be prouder. Emily Osment plays her namesake character Gabi… how cool is that??
Here’s the story in a nutshell:
Two worlds collide when Josh (Jonathan Sadowski), a wealthy young tech entrepreneur, meets Gabi (Emily Osment), a feisty young food blogger, looking to be his personal chef. Gabi is desperate for the job and must prove herself, mostly to Josh’s aide, Elliot (Rex Lee), who prefers a famous chef for the job. When Josh enlists Gabi to prepare a romantic meal for him and his girlfriend, the dinner goes awry and Gabi finds herself in a very awkward position. With the help of her best friend Sofia (Aimee Carrero) and Josh’s housekeeper Yolanda (Kym Whitley), Gabi turns a difficult situation into an opportunity for employment and maybe even love.

One of the best things about having your San Francisco-based friend filming a show here in Los Angeles is that you get more face time with her! The last time Gabi came to town I visited her on the set, where she was filming some short cooking videos with Emily Osment for Good Morning America. While I was there she cooked up a delicious Grilled Flatbread with Fire-Roasted Eggplant, Tomatoes and Mint. Doesn’t that sound like something I would make? Like I said, Gabi and I have a lot in common. 🙂
On that same visit, we grabbed lunch at a local restaurant called Lemonade. One of the gimmicks at this restaurant is– you guessed it!– lemonade. They offer 8 different custom lemonades to choose from that vary by season. I tried their Watermelon Rosemary Lemonade and fell in love. I promptly went home and created my own recipe, but instead of straining it I used blended watermelon chunks and ice to make it more slushy/summery. Then I added a splash of vodka, because… vodka! (You can totally leave it out to keep things virgin.) It’s the perfect easy drink to whip up on a summer evening. I’ll be making a batch tomorrow night to toast Gabi and the “Young & Hungry” premiere!

- 3 fresh rosemary sprigs
- 1/3 cup sugar, or more to taste (you may substitute agave or your favorite sweetener to taste)
- 2 lbs. chilled seedless watermelon chunks (about 5 cups)
- 1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, or more to taste
- 20-30 ice cubes
- 1/3 cup vodka (optional - use more to make it more "tipsy" if you like!)
- In a small saucepan combine 1 cup of water, sugar or sweetener and rosemary sprigs. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let the mixture return to room temperature, letting the rosemary steep as it cools.
- In a blender, combine rosemary syrup, chilled watermelon chunks, and lemon juice. Blend till well combined and frothy. Add ice cubes a few at a time and continue blending until the texture is slushy, like a blended margarita. The amount of ice cubes you'll need to achieve this texture varies from batch to batch; just add till it feels right. Blend in the vodka if you want to make it "tipsy." Taste; add additional sweetener or lemon juice if desired.
- Serve in chilled glasses and enjoy!
