I have a big, beautiful fig tree in my front yard that is teeming with fresh fruit right now. When the figs first started appearing about a month ago, a squirrel living in our yard would devour the ripe ones before I had a chance to pick them. Now that we’re in the thick of fig season, the squirrel can’t keep up, and there is plenty of fruit to go around.
Fresh figs, when fully ripe, are like candy to me. They’re sweet and juicy and honey-like, not to mention incredibly beautiful. In the past I’ve stuffed them, topped warm gooey cheese with them, grilled them, made jams with them and sprinkled them on salads. Now I’m looking for more yummy ideas.
What are your favorite ways to prepare fresh figs? Do you prefer them raw or cooked? Please share your ideas in the comments below!
Fruit leather. Cooked (maybe with a little added sugar) into a thick paste, spread out thin on a rectangular, edged, pan, and dried to about the constancy of leather, then cut into strips for chewing. It can last for years in a dry place.
Oh my, fig tree is one of my favorite fruit, I love to eat it when ripe, thanks for sharing your recipe
Do you know why my figs are not sweet this year? Not the good candy taste. I like to eat them raw but this year I am going to have to do something else with them.
I have noticed that too. Not sure why! Changing weather patterns, perhaps? Try making preserves with them and sweetening to taste: https://toriavey.com/toris-kitchen/spiced-fig-preserves/
Hi Tori, I love all your recipes and website. I have been wanting a fig tree, as I had my first bite of a fig did taste better than candy. My question is, can you recommend a fig tree for me to grow? I appreciate your feed back.
Looking forward to vg more of your awesome cooking.
Thank You.
Sincerely,
Caren Laguna
Hi Caren, Tori’s assistant Ashley here. As far as I know, the fig tree in Tori’s yard was there for years before she moved into the house. I would start by doing a Google search to see what kind of climate and soil works best for certain types of fig trees and see which is best suited for your home. Hope this helps!

Good afternoon, I always make sweet figs, a delight
I dry my extra figs and can enjoy the dried figs throughout the year, I made a simple plywood box, large enough for the wire rack I had in the kitchen. I cut the figs in half, place on the rack, put the rack in the box, cover the box with some screen and leave it in the sun. I take the figs inside at night and put them back in the sun in the morning. takes about 6 days.
Recipes
Hi Tori, me again with a wonderful fig recipe without a recipe !
Just take a bunch of figs, cut them in half and fry them in little butter
( please never margarine)and when they begin to brown pour some wine, sugar or honey to taste, any kind of wine could be brandy, whisky or to your likes and let them get in fire and burn until the Alcohol disappears, let them cook for a while and serve them with a roast beef or duck, also with vanilla ice cream .
you can also use them to make stuffed meat with same figs, just a little imagination and they get to be delicious! I buy a raw bread crust and I put inside a whole Brie and the same figs chopped, cover it with the same crust and put some egg wash and to the oven until brown and serve it warm.
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your amazing talents with food. I have recently discovered your site and am already enjoying your recipes. I am grateful to you, Tori!
P.S. Did you know that your name means “bird” in Japanese?!!
Lisa, you just brought back such a nice memory. My grandmother had a friend named Aiko from Japan and she always called me “Little Bird.” Maybe that’s why I like birds so much!
Figs and Spanish jamon or Italian Parma. Delicious
Sure, I will exchange cuttings with any Fig’s lover…
would you like to trade some fig tree branch cuttings? if so please email me at ediblelandscaping.sc@gmail.com I have several varieties and would be happy to trade a few 6-8 inch cuttings with you
do you have to grow inside if you live in Ontario because I would love to try to grow a treee
There is a great recipe that I have. It is not kosher, but delicious. Stuff the fig with goat cheese and wrap the fig in proscuitto and roast. The outside is crispy and delicious and the inside is gooey and sweet!
Love figs.
