Breaking the Fast with Brinner – 20 Easy Recipes for the Yom Kippur Break Fast
Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement) is the day of repentance, the most holy day on the Jewish calendar. Described as a Shabbat shabbaton (Shabbat of solemn rest) in the Torah, Yom Kippur is a day of fasting, prayer, and reflection. It is the culmination of a period of time during the month of Elul in which Jews are required to take stock of their lives, to ask forgiveness from friends and family, and to take steps toward self-improvement for the year to come.
Jews all over the world observe Yom Kippur, and there are many different traditions for breaking the 25-hour long fast. In our home, we have two traditions– we start with a shot of vodka (a tradition from the Russian side of my husband’s family), then we break the fast with “brinner”– breakfast-style foods. We gravitate towards these types of foods because they are easy to prep ahead and throw together (important when you’re weak and light headed!). They’re also comforting, easy on the stomach, and they taste great. Plus there is just something so fun about eating breakfast for dinner, don’t you agree?
